PhD degrees at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation
As a general policy, we encourage potential PhD students to first study for an MSc degree, as this permits a year of in-depth exposure to the School and its research staff before embarking on a particular project. Potential students may be admitted directly to the PhD program if they have carried out prior postgraduate study, or in exceptional circumstances. Funding InformationLATEST UPDATE: ANC currently is inviting applications for a PhD in Learning and Inference in Highly Structured Continuous-Time Stochastic Systems. PhD study at the School of Informatics is supported by a number of UK research councils and other funding bodies, including EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, Wellcome Trust, Commonwealth scholarships, etc. Ordinarily the period of funding is three years for the PhD (with the possibility of four years if an MSc is done first). It is a requirement of ESRC funding that an MSc is successfully completed before beginning PhD study. ESRC has changed the nature of its studentships, and for applicants interested in enrolling for a PhD they now offer a "(1+3) studentship". Further details are available on their WWW page. The "1" of the (1+3) is a training year consisting of taking one of ESRC's accredited MSc courses. Informatics has such accreditation for some of its MSc courses. Students successfully finishing this first year may then proceed for three funded years for a PhD. Applicants whose proposed area of research falls within the ESRC's remit are strongly encouraged to apply for the (1+3) funding if they do not have an ESRC accredited MSc already. We will advise in all cases of uncertainty. ESRC is still operating its normal PhD competition, now the "(+3)" award.
