Can motor cortex regulate the degree of correlation of the spikes of its neurons during behaviour?

We performed intracellular recordings from pyramidal neurons in Layer 5B of the primary motor cortex of behaving mice. We found that during behaviour a subset of neurons displays an increase in (i) firing rate, (ii) large subthreshold compound synaptic events and (iii) high-frequency power of the membrane potential spectrum. Our modelling suggested that an increase in pairwise correlation between excitatory inputs can explain the experimental data. Here we tune the parameters of a recurrent Exc-Inh neural network to our experimental data and investigate what sort of external drive is needed to regulate pairwise correlations and large subthreshold events.

The Spatial Kappa approach to modelling the AMPA receptors lateral trafficking in spine

Abstract: We use an extension of the rule-based modelling language Kappa that includes spatial concepts in a form of compartments and connections, which explicitly captures agent's location and diffusion.
This approach allows modelling the transmembrane AMPA receptor's lateral trafficking across dendritic spine in biologically realistic way and examine the critical conditions for their clustering on the top of the spine, which is important for synaptic strength and LTP formation.
