"Critical period for ocular dominance"

Just as we are right- or left-handed, we also are right/left-eyed. We are not born with an eye preference. We learn it from experience a short time after coming to this world. There is a crucial time window, called critical period (CP), during which the dominance in visual cortex is established. Anything that is wrong with one of the eyes during that period will influence the overall outcome. However, before and after the critical period, any attempt to disrupt normal vision for a short time does not alter the dominance significantly.

Several computational models are describing this phenomena and include Hebbian learning and even homeostatic plasticity. However, not many of them consider the influence of inhibition. I will try to convince you, that inhibitory neurons play a major role in CP plasticity and how they can change the models that already exist.

"Using kmers to predict protein binding from DNA sequence"

Proteins such as transcription factors are known to bind to DNA at specific locations, often to a 'motif' within the DNA. However, predicting where these proteins are bound from the DNA is difficult, usually leading to a large number of false positives. In this talk, I'll give an overview of the biology and how researchers are tackling this problem. Within this framework, I'll introduce a method for representing distinct kmers as integers according to a modulo 4 arithmetic, and will talk about how this may help expand existing methods.
