Title:  “Investigating the potential for Neurodegenerative Diseases models in Drosophila melanogaster”

Abstract:

With 75% of human Neurodegenerative disease related genes having homologs in Drosophila, its cheap and ease of maintenance in the lab and no ethical boundaries, the humble fruit fly represents an excellent in vivo system to dig into the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration.
The most common technique used in this studies consists in “Humanising” Drosophila by engineering them to express pathogenic variants of human proteins in highly selected areas of the nervous system. This method allow  drosophilists to start from the study of simple behaviour proceeding towards more complicated electrophysiological and structural analysis of the neurons interested in the neurodegeneration processes.

In my group, we are currently using these techniques to investigate the early neurological effects of the Amyloid-β42 peptide on the olfactory function, using a larval Drosophila model for Alzheimer's Disease (AD).
During this talk, I will present a brief summary of our (still on-going and unpublished) behavioural study on the olfactory impairment in larval Drosophila melanogaster AD model.
