"Boltzmann Machines as statistical models of neural activity"

Following the work of Koester et al., we show that restricted Boltzmann machines can be used to reproduce patterns of discretised neural activity similarly to Ising-like models. Compared to the latter, RBMs are better at reproducing higher-order correlations and the global statistics of activity, even for a smaller number of parameters.  Moreover, their complexity can be tuned by adjusting the number of hidden units, and they show evidence of critical behaviour.

"Pseudo-Marginal Slice Sampling"

This talk is about sampling from probability distributions in a challenging setting: we can only compute noisy (but unbiased) estimates of the probability density function at individual settings of variables we choose. Previous work on such "pseudo-marginal" methods have been used in inference problems in genetics, continuous time stochastic processes, hierarchical models, and "doubly-intractable" distributions.

I'll present algorithms that are easier to apply than previous work and sometimes work a lot better.

Joint work with Matt Graham.
