This talk will present an overview of five machine learning problems that interest me:  developing the theory and methodology of random forests, scaling deep learning, understanding of the limits of randomization and de-randomization, developing efficient learning algorithms for massive probabilistic graphical models, and extending the theory, methodology and applications of Bayesian optimization and bandits for increased automation.  I will also briefly present some examples of how these technologies are used in big data industrial applications.
