"What goes on inside a fixation in binocular reading? Some similarities and some differences between Chinese and English reading"

Reading is typically characterized as static fixations alternating with saccades that move the eyes to a new part of the text. However, fixations themselves are very dynamic events. We will describe analyses of some 450k data points in each of two reading sub-corpora of the Edinburgh 5-Language Corpus of Eye-Movements in Reading. We will consider the differential roles of the two eyes, and how those roles should be defined. Relevant behaviours include the length and direction of movement within the fixation, the presence or absence of convergence in different periods of the fixation, the degree of synchonization of the two eyes, and the effects of the relative visual complexity of Chinese orthography.
