Statistical Mechanics and Inference in Models of Neural Dynamics

Neuroscience has developed tools to model dynamics at a range of scales, from single ion channels to large-scale fluctuations observed on EEG and fMRI. How can we connect these different scales, and build interpretable models of collective dynamics that retain their connection to single-neuron activity? One approach draws inspiration from the statistical mechanics of chemical reaction modeling: descriptions of stochastic single-neuron activity can be used to derive state-space equations governing coarser spatial and temporal scales. This talk explores mesoscopic spatiotemporal scales, focusing on an approximation technique called moment-closure. We illustrate two state-space models derived from microscopic descriptions, on coarse-grained in time, and the other in space.
