The ability to automatically observe, record and classify spontaneous behaviour of laboratory animals in their normal homecages provides new insights into the effects of genetics, pharmacology and offers an unprecedented opportunity to monitor their welfare. However, maintaining identity within the confined social environment of commonly used homecages is technically very challenging. We will describe the development and validation of such a system. We will then present a series of case studies where we have been able to use it to gain new insights into the phenotype of genetically modified mice as well as a powerful adjunct to the routine welfare monitoring procedures already in place. Finally, we will show preliminary evidence that we can start to automatically identify earlier welfare intervention by looking at temporal changes in the behavioural profiles of individual animals during study.
