 "Model-based fMRI of aversive processing"

Functional neuroimaging experiments employing appetitive conditioning tasks and reinforcement learning models have reliably found neural activity correlated with expected value and prediction error within the human brain. Such activity can be altered in patients with depression and schizophrenia in a manner consistent with their characteristic symptoms and biases. Fewer studies have examined aversive processing, which is fundamental to anxiety. My talk will summarise recent work in this area and describe how it can be extended to test for individual differences in neural activation predicted to underly self-report markers of negative emotionality.
