Neural Mechanisms of Negative Bias in Psychiatric Disorders, Mechanisms of Treatment and Relevance to Executive Function (PhD)

Depression is a prevalent psychiatric disorder characterised by symptoms including persistent low mood and apathy up to a level of disability with social and economic consequences. The aim of the current project is to utilize existing computational modelling methodologies in the domain of Cognitive Neuroscience to outline new theoretical accounts of the neural basis of the negative bias in information processing in depression, as well as possible mechanisms of its amelioration, consistent with the existing behavioural and neuroimaging experimental data. The project aims to develop novel theoretical computational accounts of the depressive negative bias and relate the most likely negative bias mechanisms to the existing formalisations of depression, as well as depression-observed cognitive deficits such as decreases in executive function and changes in decision-making.
