What role does self-organized lateral connectivity in V1 play in predicting spatiotemporal response? (PhD)

Building on modelling work from my MSc project, I propose to build the first self-organizing developmental models that include detailed simulation of the time course of visual processing.  Using these models, I hope to explain how circuits in V1, and in particular the lateral connections in V1, can perform prediction of spatiotemporal sequences, based on a history of experience with such sequences built up over the course of development.  Specific phenomena to investigate include the line-motion illusion, the relation between spontaneous spatiotemporal visual system activity and visually evoked responses, and theoretical relationships between this mechanistic model and models of spatiotemporal prediction from information theoretic or probabilistic perspectives.
