Contextual processing in the visual cortex (PhD)

Currently I’m looking into so called center-surround interactions in the visual area of the brain. Neurons react to stimuli presented in their receptive field (the center), but their responses can be modulated by presenting additional stimuli outside (in the surround). What can these interactions tell us about the connectivity? What is their functional role? What should the interactions be if one would want to do as good a job as possible?
