State-Dependency of Activity in Thalamocortical Circuits (PhD)

My project is about state-dependency of activity in thalamocortical circuits. It is well known that sensory stimuli are far more reliably perceived during wakefulness and alertness than during sleep, but why this is is not completely understood. The thalamus and cortex are known to be involved in both sensory processing and regulation of brain state, and, driven by data recorded simultaneously from thalamic and cortical populations, my project aims to use data analysis and computational modelling techniques to investigate thalamocortical propagation of sensory information in different brain states. Modelling may be undertaken using phenomenological, mechanistic or coding model approaches.
