A systems biological approach to Parkinson’s Disease (PhD)

During my PhD I am interested in gaining a better understanding of Parkinson’s Disease. This complex undertaking will be tackled through a systems biological approach. Therefore I am using graph analysis and dynamic modeling techniques.
The statistical analysis of different protein (expression) datasets gives a first insight into highly affected subcellular compartments that might lead to the disease outbreak.
In particular the synaptic compartment of the neuron will be analyzed using rule-based modeling. This kind of approach allows to address the combinatorial explosion, emerging when describing ever growing systems. The modelling language of choice is “kappa”.
During the coming months we are planning to finish some first graph analytical studies and will be investigating in a dynamic process on the synaptic membrane called clathrin mediated endocytosis.
Based on the obtained results the coming research focus will be defined and further explored.
