A Phenomenological Approach to Modelling Axon Guidance at the Mouse Optic Chiasm (PhD)

The precise guidance of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons from the retina to their targets in the brain is key to the development of a healthy visual system. One important point in this journey is at the optic chiasm where there exists a number of choices for each axon, upon which the correct decision must be imparted by extracellular cues, many of which have been identified experimentally. This project aims to create a 3D reconstruction of the RGC axons journey though the mouse optic chiasm and to incorporate this into a computational model in order to test the current understanding of this model system. These two approaches will complement each other and test key ideas in the field of axon guidance as well as potentially providing novel insights.
