Research Interests

My interests, broadly, are in neural computation and neural networks. How do neurons work together to accomplish so many difficult tasks? How does their connectivity relate?

Currently I'm looking into so called center-surround interactions in the visual area of the brain. Neurons react to stimuli presented in their receptive field (the center), but their responses can be modulated by presenting aditional stimuli outside (in the surround). What can these interactions tell us about the connectivity? What is their functional role? What should the interactions be if one would want to do as good a job as possible?
