Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping (SLAM) entails a robot building a map of the environment while concurrently monitoring its location within it. This technology is underdeveloped for real-world scenarios. A neuromorphic silicon retina such as the Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) outputs a sequence of events representing pixel locations where contrast changes have been detected. My PhD project aims to employ a DVS on board a robot with the goal of improving its perception capabilities. Methodologies adapted from frame-based computer vision techniques will be investigated with the purpose of improving performance in robotic tasks such as SLAM, obstacle avoidance and path planning.
