Getting around Edinburgh couldn't be easier with reliable bus services
and numerous taxis. The city itself is compact enough that visitors
can take to the pavements and walk to their chosen destinations,
admiring the beautiful buildings and park areas as they go.
Two things about Edinburgh Sreet names are worth noting: first, often a street changes its name many times (e.g., North Bridge, South Bridge, Nicholson Street, St. Patrick Street, St. Patrick Square, Clerk Street, South Clerk Street, Newington Road, Minto Street, Mayfield Gardens and Craigmillar Park is really just one street running from north to south one block east of Appleton Tower). Second, pay attention to the last word in a street name: e.g., Clermiston Avenue, Clermiston Crescent, Clermiston Drive, Clermiston Gardens, Clermiston Grove, Clermiston Green, Clermiston Hill, Clermiston Lane, Clermiston Park, Clermiston Place, Clermiston Road and Clermiston Terrace are all different streets, and often they can be in different areas of town! Most city centre bus stops have clear maps of the bus routes served by that stop and fares. In all buses you have to pay the driver as you enter. LRT (timetable enquiries: 555 6363) run the maroon coloured buses and require exact fare: 50p, 70p, and 90p in town, depending on distance. (Appleton Tower to Pollock Halls will likely be 50p, but, to be honest, especially in rush hour walking will be much faster.) A Day Saver allows unlimited travel around Edinburgh for a day on LRT buses and costs £2.40. A one week Rider Card costs £10.50 and can also be used on First Bus services after 7pm and on Sundays. First Bus operate the green buses which do not require exact fare. Useful phone mumbers:
